Big Ten and SEC Dominate Athletic Department Revenues; Pac-12 is Struggling

USA Today released one of the more enlightening and highly anticipated annual items in college sports on Thursday. They updated the NCAA Finances database that includes revenues, expenses and other notes for 230 college athletic departments for 2015-16.

And Pac-12 fans will scroll … and scroll … and scroll. On a list dominated by Big Ten and SEC schools, you won't find a Pac-12 member on the revenue side until No. 23 Oregon.

Texas A&M sits at the top with $194,388,450 in revenue, nearly $7 million higher than the next team, Texas, who had a shade below $188 million. The Aggies are one of six SEC teams in the top 10 and nine in the top 15. All 12 SEC teams are ranked in the top 34.

The Big Ten is led by Ohio State (No. 3) and Michigan (No. 5) and while those are the only two schools in the top 10, the conference has four in the top 12 and eight in the top 22. In all, the Big Ten and SEC combine for 18 of the top 22, ahead of any Pac-12 school.

The Big 12 has the Longhorns at No. 2 and Oklahoma at No. 6 but then have a gigantic drop-off until No. 26 West Virginia. The ACC is also lacking in top-tier schools. Their top school is No. 18 Florida State and have only one other team in the top 25 (Louisville, No. 21). The Pac-12 is both the last Power Five conference to appear and has the lowest-ranked Power Five program with Washington State at No. 55.

Here's a look at the top 100 schools. Click here for the rest of the rankings, along with USA Today's metholodogy for the numbers.
