HERO Sports is counting down the days until the kickoff of the 2018 college football season on Saturday, Aug. 25, by featuring the best player in the FBS at each jersey number, from 99-1. Each day, from May 18 through Aug. 24, we'll publish one article showcasing the best player whose jersey number matches the number of days remaining.
No. 28 Mark Gilbert
Duke – CB
Mark Gilbert played 914 snaps last season. The Duke cornerback was targeted on 60 of them, six of which he intercepted, according to Pro Football Focus.
Chew on that: Mark Gilbert intercepted 10 percent of the passes thrown his direction by opposing quarterbacks. He was especially dominant on slant and go routes, recording passer ratings of 2.8 (FBS average is 92.7) and 17.7 (90.7), respectively.
It was an outrageous season that earned the 6-foot-1, 175-pounder from Fayetteville, N.C., an All-ACC First-Team nod and thrust him into the conversation for the top cornerback prospects in the 2019 draft.
Gilbert is an All-America candidate and the best No. 28 in college football, joining teammate Joe Giles-Harris on the list.
