Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty was 27 yards away from breaking the FBS single-season rushing yards record.
The Broncos star, who was the Heisman Trophy runner-up behind Colorado wide receiver and cornerback Travis Hunter, had 2,497 yards on the ground after 13 games going into the Fiesta Bowl on Tuesday evening. But he ended up with 104 yards and no touchdowns on 30 carries in the loss to Penn State.
What’s The FBS Record For Rushing Yards In A Single Season?
Barry Sanders set the FBS single-season rushing yards record at 2,628 in 1988 at Oklahoma State.
Jeanty was very much within reach of that record, considering he averaged 192 yards per game going into the week.
“Ashton Jeanty is a warrior,” Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson said. “Even on the 13-game run, how he lived in the training room, how he was able to not only play in the games where the nation was watching with the amount of carries and yards and violent hits he took, he also was doing the same thing in practice, grinding to go play his best.”
What’s The FBS Record For Rushing Touchdowns In A Single Season?
Barry Sanders also owns the FBS single-season rushing touchdowns record with 37, a mark he also established in 1988 at Oklahoma State.
Jeanty finished the season with 29 touchdowns on the ground. The most he’s scored in a game is six, which he did in Week 1 of this season against Georgia Southern.
