Luke McCaffrey hasn’t played wide receiver for very long. But in the time that he did so at Rice, he thrived.
He also performed well enough at the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine for a pro team to use a Day 2 draft pick on him. McCaffrey was selected in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders with the No. 100 overall pick on Friday night.
Here’s what that means for McCaffrey’s first pro contract.

Luke McCaffrey’s Contract Details
McCaffrey is projected to be able to sign a four-year, $4.9 million contract with the Commanders, according to Spotrac. McCaffrey’s deal could include an $874,000 signing bonus and an average annual value of $1.2 million.
There’s a limit for NFL rookie contracts depending on when players are drafted, so there likely won’t be much negotiating needed.
McCaffrey was the fifth Group of Five prospect off the board in this year’s draft and the first from the AAC.
