After Air Force lost three times in the past three weeks, a new team is at the top of the Mountain West rankings.
There’s plenty of other talented teams in the league, though. Here’s a ranking of the best Mountain West squads and predictions for this week’s games.

Mountain West Rankings And Records
|6||San Jose State||6-5|
|12||San Diego State||3-8|
1. UNLV (9-2)
Not many people believed UNLV would make it to this point with only two losses. But the Rebels defeated Vanderbilt and have won seven of their eight games since then.
The Rebels climbed up this ranking with a convincing win over a good Wyoming team, and they improved their resume by beating Air Force last week. UNLV is 6-1 in conference play right now and deserves some respect.
2. Boise State (6-5)
It’s difficult to figure out exactly how good Boise State is, and that’s even more challenging after the Broncos fired head coach Andy Avalos in the wake of a blowout win over New Mexico. But after the Broncos beat Wyoming by 25 points and defeated Utah State 45-10 last week, I can’t leave them outside of the top five.
Even while going back and forth between two quarterbacks, Boise State has scored at least 30 points in each of its last six games. The Broncos could still earn a berth in the Mountain West Championship after winning three of their last four matchups.
3. Air Force (8-3)
The Falcons have defeated five Mountain West opponents, and four of those games were decided by double-digit points. They also beat Wyoming despite being without starting quarterback Zac Larrier for the end of the contest.
Air Force has lost its last three games but has a phenomenal rushing attack and a solid defense. That could be enough to earn a conference championship.
4. Wyoming (7-4)
Wyoming recently lost to Air Force, Boise State, and UNLV. However, I still think the Cowboys should be regarded as a top-five Mountain West team in terms of talent.
Wyoming quarterback Andrew Peasley has shown potential, and the Cowboys have a strong resume, having defeated Texas Tech and Fresno State. The Cowboys should be capable of finishing the season on a high note.
5. Fresno State (8-3)
Fresno State might’ve lost to New Mexico last week, but the Bulldogs are still a formidable team.
Fresno State has a strong rushing attack and a standout defense – similar to Air Force. I don’t believe the Bulldogs will lose another game the rest of this season.
Best Of The Rest
6. San Jose State (6-5)
7. Utah State (5-6)
8. Colorado State (5-6)
9. New Mexico (4-7)
10. Hawaii (4-8)
11. Nevada (2-9)
12. San Diego State (3-8)
Mountain West Predictions
Air Force vs. Boise State Prediction
I’m picking Boise State to win but for Air Force to cover the spread at +7. I also am predicting the game will go Over 46.5 total points.
With a chance to play for the Mountain West Championship on the line, I think both offenses will end up playing at a high level. And even despite a change at head coach after Andy Avalos was fired, Boise State put up 45 points at Utah State last week.
I think this will be a very close contest, which is why I wouldn’t pick either team to win by more than a touchdown. But Boise State’s fans should show up after a tumultuous season, and I believe the Broncos will be victorious thanks in part due to a favorable atmosphere.
San Jose State vs. UNLV Prediction
I’m picking UNLV to win and cover the spread at -2.5. I also am predicting the game will go Over 59.5 points.
San Jose State’s recent five-game winning streak has certainly been impressive. However, only one of those games was against an opponent with a winning record (Fresno State).
I’m anticipating UNLV’s offense, which is first in the Mountain West with 35.9 points per game scored, will continue to thrive against the Spartans at home. I could see SJSU keeping this game to single digits, but UNLV is capable of winning by more than a field goal in my mind.
Utah State vs. New Mexico Prediction
I’m picking Utah State to win and cover the spread at -6. I also am predicting the game will go Under 60.5 points.
Wyoming vs. Nevada Prediction
I’m picking Wyoming to win and cover the spread at -10.5. I also am predicting the game will go Under 41.5 total points.
Fresno State vs. San Diego State Prediction
I’m picking Fresno State to win and cover the spread at -5.5. I also am predicting the game will go Over 47.5 points.
Colorado State vs. Hawaii Prediction
I’m picking Colorado State to win and cover the spread at -5.5. I also am predicting the game will go Under 55.5 total points.
