No. 2 seed Sam Houston defeated No. 1 seed South Dakota State 23-21 in a thriller to win the 2021 spring FCS national champion. Its the first FCS title in SHSU program history.

After recovering a fumble, SDSU scored on an Isaiah Davis 1-yard touchdown run to cap a 5-play, 41-yard drive midway through the first quarter.
SHSU tied it up with 11:16 to play in the second quarter with the electric Jequez Ezzard scoring on a 35-yard touchdown catch.
The game was hit with a lightning delay with 8:25 left in the second quarter. The delay lasted from 2:05 p.m. CT to 3:20 p.m.
Right out of the delay, SDSU drove into field goal range, but Cole Frahm’s 43-yard FG attempt was low and no good.
SHSU responded with a 9-play, 74-yard drive ending with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Eric Schmid to Ezzard with 1:21 left before halftime.
SHSU extended its lead to 17-7 with 37 seconds left in the third quarter with a 45-yard field goal by Seth Morgan.
SDSU responded with a 5-play, 72-yard drive that ended with an Isaiah Davis 28-yard TD run to make it 17-14 with 13:12 to play.
With 5:41 to play, the true freshman Isaiah Davis did it again with an incredible 85-yard to give SDSU a 21-17 lead.
SHSU came up clutch again late. Schmid found Ife Adeyi for a 10-yard TD pass with 16 seconds left to win it 23-21 and finish 10-0.
