UIW Lands UAlbany Transfer WR Roy Alexander
UIW received a commitment last week from Roy Alexander, a transfer wide receiver from UAlbany.
It’s a great get for the Cardinals, landing a known FCS commodity. Alexander (5-10, 200 lbs) was an impact player at UAlbany. He had a team-high 37 receptions for 560 yards in 2021 with three touchdowns. In 2022, he added 47 catches for 610 yards and two TDs. Alexander missed most of the 2023 regular season due to an injury.
UIW has now added five FCS transfers and 11 FBS transfers this offseason.
The Cardinals also return First Team All-Southland QB Zach Calzada, who threw for 2,353 yards, 18 TDs, and eight interceptions last year, plus five rushing scores.
Elijawah Tolbert Returns to EIU
The transfer portal giveth, and the transfer portal taketh. For Eastern Illinois, it did both when it comes to standout linebacker Elijawah Tolbert.
Tolbert entered the portal and then committed/enrolled at Missouri State this spring. But he recently announced he’d be returning to Eastern Illinois with the blessing of EIU coaches and teammates.
“I had to address the (team) captains and they trickled it down to the team,” Tolbert said. “It was a whole EIU decision. That’s what makes Coach Wilk so great.”
The 6-foot-1 and 230-pounder is a two-time All-Conference First Team performer (2022 All-OVC, 2023 All-Big South-OVC). Tolbert totaled 70 tackles in 2022 and 87 tackles with seven TFLs last fall.
EIU finished 8-3 last year and was one of the first four teams left out of the playoff bracket, a massive improvement from its 2-9 campaign in 2022. The Panthers return several starters, including their big three offensively of QB Pierce Holley, RB MJ Flowers, and WR Eli Mirza.
