Welcome to the 2020 FCS Jersey Countdown.
Throughout the May-August months, HERO Sports is going to name the best returning FCS player by jersey number, 99-1. Due to rosters being updated at different times for teams across the country and to keep things consistent, jersey numbers are based on the 2019 season.
The full 99-1 countdown/schedule can be found here.
*Note: Jersey numbers are based on 2019 rosters.
86: LJ Wesneski, TE (Sr.) — Albany
Jeff Undercuffler had one of the best FCS freshman seasons ever for a quarterback as he led the subdivision with 41 touchdown passes in 2019. A big, reliable target for him was tight end LJ Wesneski.
Wesneski caught 21 passes for 277 yards, but seven of those catches went for touchdowns. He tied for second on the team for the most TD receptions.
It was a breakthrough junior season for the 6-foot-3 and 260-pounder. He started 10 games in 2018 and had six catches for 95 yards and a touchdown. Wesneski had two catches as a redshirt freshman in 2017.
His standout junior year was recognized with All-CAA Third Team honors.
Undercuffler’s go-to receiver last year was senior Juwan Green, an All-American who signed an undrafted free agent deal with Atlanta. There’s a strong likelihood that Wesneski’s targets will increase, especially in the red zone or when the Great Danes look to move the chains on third down.
