FCS Kickoff Countdown: 89 Days, the Best Player in FCS Who Wears No. 89

The countdown to the 2018 college football season is on. Four FCS teams are in action Aug. 25 as Duquesne takes on UMass, Prairie View faces Rice and North Carolina A&T and Jacksonville State square off in ESPN’s FCS Kickoff.

HERO Sports is going to count down each day by highlighting the best player in FCS football who wears the jersey number of the number of days to kickoff. You can find the running list of top players here.

89: Charlie Taumoepeau, junior tight end – Portland State

Taumoepeau showed he was ready for a breakout 2017 season in PSU's first two games. Against FBS foes BYU and Oregon State, he combined for 10 catches for 125 yards. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound tight end went on to finish the year with 45 receptions for 673 yards and three touchdowns. It was the most catches by a Viking tight end since 1988.

He showed some play-making ability with his 15.0 yards per catch. Taumoepeau had nine receptions for 145 yards and a touchdown at Eastern Washington along with a two-touchdown performance against Montana State off of five catches for 92 yards. The sophomore had at least one catch in every game and went on to be named a Big Sky Second Team All-Conference member.

Taumoepeau proved to be a tough matchup for defenses with the ability to flex out away from the offensive line. He moves quite well for 240 pounds, as shown in the video below.
