No. 43 Leroy Godfrey
Houston – LB
Leroy Godfrey entered last season with only five career appearances and one career tackle. The work ethic was there but, after a redshirt year in 2015 and minimal playing time in 2016, Houston's then-junior linebacker had yet to translate the work into results.
The work translated last year — in a big, big way. Godfrey, a 6-foot-2, 235-pounder from Missouri City, Texas, had a modest 33 tackles but more than one-quarter of them were tackles for loss (8.5).
Check out the motor on this play as chases Quinton Flowers and, despite tripping, finally gets the sack:
"It was a big step," Godfrey said in December of last year. "Last year, I would do extra work with [defensive football analyst Thomas Dunson]. He was a big part of helping me develop into the player I am right now. Listening and trusting the coaches, I saw the results this year."
Godfrey will move from outside to inside linebacker this year and is the best No. 43 in college football.
