For the second straight year, a September hurricane will wreak havoc on college football.
After Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey forced college football, cancelations and time changes last year, Hurricane Florence is scheduled to hit the east coast on Thursday night or Friday morning, likely walloping North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and the surrounding states with winds of at least 140 miles per hour and up to 20 inches of rain. While college football is an irrelevant speck on the radar of life when a hurricane is set to make landfall, we're still tracking games impacted by Hurricane Florence.
Here's a list of cancelations, time changes and other updates:
Canceled: West Virginia at North Carolina State
"NC State will not play its scheduled football game with West Virginia University this weekend due to the increasing likelihood of severe and unsafe conditions associated with Hurricane Florence," said NC State's release on Tuesday.
Update: As of Tuesday afternoon, there were rumors the game could be played in mid-October but those haven't been confirmed.
Canceled: UCF at North Carolina
"With Hurricane Florence bearing down on the Carolinas, University of North Carolina officials announced Tuesday that the UCF-UNC football game scheduled for Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C. will not be played," said UCF's release.
"UNC and UCF will continue to discuss the feasibility of playing the game at a later date this season. Also, it is unlikely the Knights will be able to replace the North Carolina contest with another game as the Knights don’t have a true open date. UCF’s only open weekend during the 2018 regular season falls on the weekend of Oct. 27. However, the Knights are scheduled to play on Thurs. Nov. 1 vs. Temple."
Canceled: East Carolina at Virginia Tech
"Citing significant imminent safety concerns, ECU has decided it will not travel to Blacksburg for Saturday’s football game against Virginia Tech due to the forecast track of Hurricane Florence that includes the high probability of a catastrophic impact on the region and perilous travel conditions before, during and after the storm,” ECU's release said on Tuesday.
Canceled: Southern Miss at App State
"Appalachian State's home football game scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, against Southern Miss will not be played this weekend in Boone due to increasing concerns associated with Hurricane Florence," said App State's release on Wednesday.
Canceled: Marshall at South Carolina
"Whether or not the game could have been played, we made the decision we think is best for the state and those who are evacuating the coast. There is no question this is the right thing to do and the decision was supported by president [Harris] Pastides, coach [Will] Muschamp, our board members and myself," South Carolina athletics director Ray Tanner said.
Location Change: Ohio at Virginia
"The Virginia athletics department announced today (Sept. 11) its home football game against Ohio, scheduled to take place Saturday, Sept. 15 at Scott Stadium, has been relocated to Vanderbilt Stadium on the campus of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.," Virginia announced on Tuesday.
Time Change: Boston College at Wake Forest
"Based on the current weather forecast related to Hurricane Florence, the Boston College at Wake Forest football game originally scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday night (Sept. 13) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has been moved to 5:30 p.m," said the ACC's release on Tuesday.
Time Change: Georgia Southern at Clemson
"In response to the potential effects of Hurricane Florence, kickoff for the Clemson vs. Georgia Southern game on Saturday has been moved up from 3:30 p.m. to noon," Clemson announced on Wednesday.
Date Change: Norfolk State at Liberty
"Due to the forecast of inclement weather from Hurricane Florence, Norfolk State University's football game at Liberty University scheduled for this Saturday (Sept. 15) in Lynchburg has been tentatively postponed to Saturday, Dec. 1," said Norfolk State's release on Tuesday.
The game will be made up at 2 p.m. on Dec. 1 at Williams Stadium in Lynchburg unless the Spartans qualify for postseason play, in which case the contest will be canceled. The Spartans were previously scheduled to conclude the regular season against Morgan State on Nov. 17.
Date Change: Old Dominion at Charlotte
"The Charlotte 49ers have announced that the 49ers Conference USA football opener vs. Old Dominion has been moved to Thursday at 4 p.m. due to the arrival of poor weather conditions expected this weekend from Hurricane Florence," said Charlotte's release on Wednesday.
Location and Date Change: Campbell at Coastal Carolina
"In response to the impending arrival of Hurricane Florence, the Coastal Carolina home football game versus Campbell originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, in Conway, S.C., has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m. ET at Barker-Lane Stadium in Buies Creek, N.C.," said Coastal Carolina's release on Monday.
