The Last Time Kliff Kingsbury Was an Offensive Coordinator: Dominance at Texas A&M

In 2012, Texas A&M, under first-year offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, averaged 44.5 points and 559 yards of total offense per game. USC didn't have 44 points or 559 yards in any game this season.

On Wednesday, 10 days after he was fired by Texas Tech, Kingsbury was officially announced as USC offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He inherits an offense that ranked in the bottom half of the FBS in most notable categories, including yards per game (84th), scoring (92nd), points per play (66th), yards per rushing attempt (80th) and yards per completion (71st). It's Kingsbury first coordinator job since 2012, when he led a Texas A&M offense that still ranks among the best in college football history.

Six years ago, he was a 32-year-old first-time Power Five coordinator who followed Kevin Sumlin from Houston. The Aggies went 11-2 in Sumlin's first year — the most wins in program history for a first-year coach and one win shy of the program record (12-1, 1992) — largely thanks to offense that scored at least 29 points in 11 of their 13 games.

Some numbers from the last time Kingsbury was an offensive coordinator:

Stat Amount FBS Rank
Total Yards Per Game 559 2nd
Yards Per Play 6.8 2nd
Rush Yards Per Attempt 5.9 2nd
Average Scoring Margin +20 3rd
Scoring Average 44.5 4th
First Half Scoring Average 24.9 4th
Rush Yards Per Game 242.1 11th
Pass Yards Per Game 316.5 14th
Points Per Play 0.502 16th
Pass Yards Per Attempt 8.2 16th
