Ward was such an exceptional talent that he never played a down in the NFL despite crushing runner-up Heath Shuler of Tennessee by a 2,310 to 688 total vote margin.
The FSU quarterback threw for just over 3,000 yards and 27 touchdowns in 1993 while leading his squad to a national title. When football scouts told him he wouldn't get drafted in the first round, Ward opted for an NBA career instead and played for 11 seasons while amassing nearly 4,000 points.
