Thirty-one states have more FBS, FCS, D2 and D3 college football teams than South Dakota. Thirty states had more wins from their programs last season than South Dakota had from their seven programs, and six states had a higher winning percentage. The Mount Rushmore State, however, had more college football wins per capita in 2017 than any other state — by a mile.

The seven South Dakota programs combined for 47 wins (and 35 losses), 11 of which came from South Dakota State, who went 9-2 during the regular season and 2-1 in the FCS playoffs. The Jackrabbits were one of the lone South Dakota team to win at least 10 games but two others won at least eight: Sioux Falls (D2) went 9-3 and South Dakota (FCS) went 8-5. And none of the state's team won fewer than four games.
The state's 47 wins gives them a nation-high 0.000054 wins per capita (population: 877,890). No other state (including British Columbia and Washington, D.C.) is higher than 0.000035 (West Virginia, 0.000034).

Here's an interactive map of wins per capita, along with a full list of all states sorted by wins per capita.
Note: British Columbia is not included because the province's one team (Simon Fraser Clan went 0-10). And Alaska is the only state without a college football team.
