Seconds left on the clock. Two point deficit. One last chance. Lateral pass after lateral pass after lateral pass. The crowd goes crazy. The announcer goes crazier. By some miracle at the hands of the football gods, the team in white reached the end zone and won the game after one of the most improbable plays in college football.
And no, I’m not talking about “the Play,” when California scored the winning touchdown by plowing through the Stanford band.
“The Play” looks like it went down just like they drew it up compared to the “Mississippi Miracle.”
In October of 2007, Trinity University used 15 lateral passes to overcome a 24-22 deficit against Millsaps. Yes, three times the number of lobs California used back in 1982. With two seconds left on the game clock and 60 yards to the end zone, Trinity starts with a forward throw and begins the impossible.
15 laterals, seven players, and 62 seconds later, Trinity reaches the end zone as the announcer proclaims it is “one of the most miraculous plays in all of college football!”
Did I mention there were 15 lateral passes?
Unreal.
