Doug Flutie's game-winning Hail Mary in 1984 has been included on every "Top College Football Plays" list over the last 34 years — most often as the No. 1 play. The 48-yard touchdown gave Boston College a win over Miami (FL) at the Orange Bowl on Nov. 23, 1984.
Every college football fan knows the play. Every sports fan knows the play. Even many non-sports fans know the play.
But do you know who was the player on the receiving end of the Hail Flutie?

Answer
Gerard Phelan
It wasn't a third-string walk-on who caught Flutie's heave; it was All-American receiver Gerard Phelan. It was one of 71 receptions (1,065 yards, four touchdowns) on the season for the Eagles' senior.
