Which States Have the Most D1 College Basketball Teams?

Nine of the 10 men's basketball teams in the Big West Conference are from California. Thirty-five other states and the District of Columbia do not have nine teams each from any conference.

Nearly one-fifth of all D1 men's college basketball teams (351) are from three states: New York (22), Texas (23) and California (24). Those states — which are three of the four most populous states in the country — are also the only ones with at least 20 teams. Ten more states have at least 10 apiece, including North Carolina (18) and Illinois (13), and 14 more have at least 10 apiece, including Missouri, whose five teams are in five different conferences.

Other random notes:

  • Alaska is the only state without a team.
  • New York, Texas and California have more teams than the bottom 26 states (including D.C.) combined.
  • Minnesota the most-populated state with one or fewer teams.
  • Thirty-three cities have multiple teams.
  • Philadelphia is home to five teams, the most of any city.
  • Charleston, S.C., is the least-populated city with three or more teams (three)

Here's an interactive map of the number of teams per state:
