A’ja Wilson is your 2020 WNBA MVP the league announced this week on ESPN’s The Jump.
Wilson was previous named the 2018 Rookie of the Year and has been an All-Star selection in both of her two WNBA seasons. This is the first MVP honor for Wilson.
A panel of sportswriters and broadcasters across the country voted on the award with Wilson receiving 43 of the 47 first-place votes and 458 points. Breanna Steward (Seattle Storm) game in second place with 308 points and three first-place votes. Candace Parker (Los Angeles Sparks) finished in third place with 219 points.
Wilson finished second in the league in scoring averaging 20.5 points per game, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks in 31.7 minutes per game. She shot a career high 48-percent from the field and led the WNBA in blocked shots and free throws made (118) and attempted (151). Wilson scored 20 points in 15 of the total 22 games in the regular season.
A huge reason for Wilson’s success lies on how they Aces run their offense through her. Wilson touches the ball nearly every possession down the floor with the ability to create, not just for herself, but her teammate too. Wilson was able to work freely in the paint without All-Star Liz Cambage on the floor with her. As much as we love the duo, Liz not playing this season created more touches and more opportunity for the 6’4 Wilson to do her thing.
Wilson will receive $15,450 and a Tiffany & Co trophy for being named 2020 WNBA Most Valuable Player.
The Las Vegas Aces earned themselves a No.1 overall seed and double-bye in the WNBA Playoffs with an overall regular season record of 18-4. They will square off against the Connecticut Sun this Sunday, September 20 in the Semifinals at 1:00pm ET on ESPN.
