It’s safe to say James Madison’s transition to the FBS has been pretty successful.
Since their move up from the FCS before the 2022 season, the Dukes have gone 40-11 overall. They’ve appeared in two bowl games and made it to the College Football Playoff a season ago. And that was all while dealing with a coaching change in the middle of that four-season stretch.
JMU went through another coaching change this offseason with Bob Chesney going to UCLA and Billy Napier taking over.
Still, college football betting odds have the Dukes as the favorites to win the Sun Belt again at +230. Their win total Over/Under is 8.5, one of the highest in the Group of Six, with the Under at +100 and the Over at -130.
So JMU is going into the 2026 campaign with high expectations once again. Here are my game-by-game predictions for the Dukes:

Sept. 5 vs. Liberty
Prediction: Win
I do expect Liberty will be one of the best teams out of Conference USA. But this isn’t the Flames team that made it to a New Year’s Six bowl. Especially with it being a season opener, I think JMU will play with a lot of energy at home against an in-state opponent and will want to prove it is still one of the best teams in the G6.
Sept. 12 vs. Wagner
Prediction: Win
I think we’ll have a good idea of what kind of team JMU is going to be at this point. We may not know for sure how the Dukes stack up with the rest of the Sun Belt in terms of talent, but this game may showcase their exact approach on both sides of the ball.
Sept. 19 at San Diego State
Prediction: Loss
This is going to be an exciting matchup. It could end up being one of the most consequential non-conference games between two G6 opponents. Both of these programs have CFP aspirations. But SDSU has a ton of continuity, and I think that helps the Aztecs earn a win at home.
Sept. 26 at Old Dominion
Prediction: Win
While I don’t think JMU will go undefeated, I don’t expect the Dukes to lose back-to-back games at any point this season, even if they’re on the road again. This is a defining two-week stretch for JMU. If the Dukes can win either at SDSU or ODU, they could keep their CFP hopes alive. The Monarchs should be a strong team once again, but I believe JMU will win here.
Oct. 3 vs. Marshall
Prediction: Win
Did I say two-game stretch? I meant three. I expect Marshall will be a legitimate Sun Belt Championship contender in Tony Gibson’s second season as head coach. But with this game being at home for JMU, I believe the Dukes will find a way to win.
Oct. 10 at Georgia Southern
Prediction: Win
Georgia Southern isn’t expected to be one of the leading contenders in the Sun Belt, but I could see the Eagles giving JMU issues, especially at home. I anticipate the Dukes’ defense will rise to the occasion here and help them earn a road victory.
Oct. 17 vs. Georgia State
Prediction: Win
Georgia State went 1-11 last season but actually proved to be a problem for the Sun Belt champion. JMU managed to win by just seven points, 14-7. But I don’t think this matchup will be quite as close, especially in Harrisonburg.
Oct. 22 at App State
Prediction: Loss
This is proving to be a heated rivalry between the Dukes and Mountaineers. Since JMU made the jump up to FBS, this series is tied at 2-2. JMU may have beaten App State 58-10 last year, but the Mountaineers won the previous two games. I expect a close battle, but I think App State will be more talented than it was last season. I also don’t foresee JMU going undefeated in Sun Belt play, and this seems to me like the most challenging game on its conference slate, especially with it being a short week.
Oct. 29 vs. Troy
Prediction: Win
Troy made it back to the Sun Belt title game, where the Trojans lost to JMU, a season ago. They’re expected to be one of the frontrunners to win the conference again in 2026. I honestly may have picked Troy to win this one if the Trojans were at home, but they aren’t. Give me JMU here.
Nov. 5 at Southern Miss
Prediction: Win
With former head coach Charles Huff and several players going to Memphis this offseason, I don’t know if USM will be in the Sun Belt Championship picture. Could the Golden Eagles get back to a bowl game with Blake Anderson at head coach? Absolutely. But I don’t know if they’ll keep up with JMU.
Nov. 14 at UConn
Prediction: Win
JMU may not have a Power Four opponent on its non-conference schedule, but the Dukes have to take on three strong G6 opponents. UConn should be one of them, even with Jim Mora going to Colorado State. Jason Candle should prove to be a great replacement for UConn. While it may be close, I think JMU will go on the road and battle for a victory.
Nov. 28 vs. Coastal Carolina
Prediction: Win
I am very high on Coastal Carolina’s future with Ryan Beard at head coach. I think we’ll see him leading a P4 team by the end of the decade if he wants to go that route because he is a young up-and-coming star in the coaching profession. Still, I think it may take a full year before CCU is a Sun Belt title contender. With this game being at JMU, I’ll go with the Dukes.
JMU Football Season Prediction
I predict JMU will go 10-2 during the 2026 regular season and therefore will go Over 8.5 wins. I also am predicting JMU will win the Sun Belt. But as of right now, I think JMU will fall just short of the College Football Playoff.
You have to think 10 wins would put JMU firmly in the CFP discussion. That said, if the Dukes don’t go on the road and beat San Diego State, that would end up hurting them. And that could be especially true if JMU is going to be compared to a Pac-12 team like Boise State – if the Broncos win the conference – or even SDSU if it wins the league.
Not that this is JMU’s fault, but the Dukes’ CFP case could also be hurt by not having a P4 team on its schedule. The CFP Selection Committee, for better or worse, seems to weigh that pretty heavily. Tulane was ranked higher than JMU last season after having two P4 wins on its resume, though both the Green Wave and Dukes ended up making the CFP anyway.
To make the CFP, I expect either JMU will need most of the other G6 conference winners to fall short of 10 wins in the regular season or JMU will need to win 11 games like it did last season. I’m not totally confident the Dukes will be capable of getting there considering some of the tough opponents they have to face on the road.
