Welcome to the 2020 FCS Jersey Countdown.
Throughout the May-September months, HERO Sports is going to name the best returning FCS player by jersey number, 99-1. Due to rosters being updated at different times for teams across the country and to keep things consistent, jersey numbers are based on the 2019 season.
The full 99-1 countdown/schedule can be found here.
*Note: Jersey numbers are based on 2019 rosters.
10: Jack Cook, QB (Jr.) — Dayton
Cook was thrown into the QB1 spot as just a redshirt freshman in the first quarter of the 2018 season-opening game. The original starter got hurt, and it was Cook’s time to prove he can produce on game day after his showing potential in practice the year prior, where he was named the Scout Team Offensive Player of the Year.
Cook stepped in and was terrific that season. He was named a HERO Sports Freshman All-American and the Pioneer Football League Offensive Freshman of the Year. Cook completed 170 of 280 passes for 2,421 yards, 20 touchdowns and just two interceptions.
Last season, he led Dayton in having the top scoring offense in the FCS with 42.6 PPG while Cook led the subdivision with 24.7 points responsible for per game. He was third in passing efficiency (169.1) and fourth in passing touchdowns (33). Once again, he took care of the ball and threw just five interceptions.
Cook went 192-306 passing for 2,697 yards while adding 470 yards on the ground and another 12 TDs, earning All-Conference Second Team honors.
