Another bland sports story that you just had to click. I’m all for controversy, but this nonsense about ex-49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has to stop.
In this week’s edition of TheMMQB.com, Giants owner John Mara flirted with the idea of signing Kaepernick to his squad, but admitted doing so would cause enormous fan retaliation:
“All my years being in the league, I never received more emotional mail from people than I did about that issue,” Mara said. “If any of your players ever do that, we are never coming to another Giants game. It wasn’t one or two letters. It was a lot. It’s an emotional, emotional issue for a lot of people, moreso than any other issue I’ve run into.”
Yikes.
All this because ole Kaeper decided to kneel during the national anthem as a way of showing his disappointment with the current state of America. After his first kneeling bit way back in September, Kaep had this to say:
“Once again, I’m not anti-American,” Kaepernick said. “I love America. I love people. That’s why I’m doing this. I want to help make America better. I think having these conversations helps everybody have a better understanding of where everybody is coming from.”
His movement stirred other NFL players to protest similarly, but also pissed off a lot of NFL fans, even though he didn’t really do anything wrong … No, I’m not treading down that path. Discussing politics creates too much tension nowadays, so it’s best to avoid doing so whenever possible.

However, I will say this about the big Nick: the man’s heart is in the right place. Most recently, he donated a total of $1 million to various charities around the nation, including the Black Youth Project 100 (BYP100) organization, Mothers Against Police Brutality and Communities United Police Reform, among others.
But we don’t talk about that, right? Because positive action doesn’t make for a sexy headline.
In any event, Colin K has yet to sign with a team this offseason, though he has met with the Seahawks — who Spike Lee assumed signed the versatile QB.
Personally, while I think it’d be weird to see Kaeps in a Seahawks uniform, I think he could benefit the team greatly in a backup role. Last season, Russell Wilson played hobbled for much of the year mainly because 1) he’s an android, and 2) there wasn’t much of an alternative. Kaep at least gives Pete Carroll some options should injuries plague Wilson again this year.
Plus, CK could throw to his favorite receiver Richard Sherman! (Bu-dum!) OK, I stole that joke from Fieldgulls.com.
