James Madison put together a remarkable 2025 campaign, winning the Sun Belt Championship and appearing in the College Football Playoff.
Despite an offseason coaching change and losing several star players through the transfer portal, the Dukes are predicted to have another strong team in 2026.

Who’s The Sun Belt Championship Favorite?
JMU is the college football betting odds favorite to repeat as the Sun Belt title winner this season at +230. Old Dominion, Troy, and Louisiana are some of the other favorites.
Sun Belt Championship Prediction & Analysis
I predict James Madison will win the Sun Belt in 2026. I can’t figure out anyone else who will truly push the Dukes.
I don’t expect JMU to drop off much going from Bob Chesney, who’s now the head coach at UCLA, to Billy Napier. While things didn’t go Napier’s way at Florida, I still think he’s good enough to help JMU remain competitive. And the Dukes have so much going for them as a program right now.
There’s not another clear threat to the Dukes, in my mind. Of course you’ve got to watch out for Old Dominion and Troy, though. In fact, I expect we’ll see a rematch between JMU and Troy in the Sun Belt title game.
Marshall is a really interesting pick to win the Sun Belt at +1100. I think head coach Tony Gibson can help the Thundering Herd get back to conference title contention in the very near future.
