Even though it’s a matchup between a Group of Five team and a Power Four program, FAU’s clash against Michigan State could be interesting in Week 1.
Michigan State will be acclimating to its new system with Jonathan Smith entering his first game as MSU’s head coach. So the Spartans might not have an easy time against FAU, which could be one of the better teams in the AAC in 2024.

FAU vs. Michigan State Prediction
I predict Michigan State will win but FAU will cover the spread at +13.5. I also project the game will go Under 45.5 total points.
I’m anticipating FAU will give the Spartans some problems in this matchup. Specifically, I think the Owls’ defense will be ready for this clash.
FAU was average defensively compared to the rest of the AAC, with 25.5 points and 397 yards per game allowed. But the team returned eight starters on that side of the ball. FAU especially should be strong up front after emphasizing that area in the transfer portal.
New FAU quarterback Cam Fancher transferred from Marshall after throwing for 2,162 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions on a 65% completion rate and rushing for 273 yards and four touchdowns in 10 games last season. He should help ensure this contest is close until the fourth quarter.
The Spartans may win, even by double digits, but I think FAU will keep this game within a couple possessions.
