Colorado State Nearly Upsets Colorado
Colorado State may not have won, but the Rams were very close to being victorious at Colorado in what was the premier matchup of the week. The Buffaloes held on to win 43-35 in double overtime.
In just his second career start, CSU quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi certainly didn’t crumble in the pressure of the moment. He completed 34 of 47 passes for 367 yards and three touchdowns but did throw three interceptions as well. The Rams seem to have a long-term solution behind center.
And the nation learned just how great Tory Horton could be. He caught 16 passes for 133 yards and a score and showed everyone why he’s one of the top G5 pro prospects this year.
Wide receiver Louis Brown (10 receptions, 131 yards, and one touchdown), tight end Dallin Holker (six receptions, 109 yards, and two touchdowns), and defensive lineman Mohamed Kamara (two sacks) also made big plays as well.
Ohio Scores Win Over Iowa State
Ohio’s position on the HERO Sports G5 Top 25 rankings has fluctuated, but the Bobcats proved they can be a great team with Kurtis Rourke at quarterback.
After Ohio lost Rourke to injury and lost to San Diego State in Week 0, the Bobcats have won their last three games. That includes a win over a Big 12 opponent as they beat Iowa State 10-7.
Rourke completed 16 of 32 throws for 135 yards and one touchdown while leading the team with 58 rushing yards. Sam Wiglusz was his primary target, as the wide receiver caught five passes for 53 yards and the score.
Ohio’s defense was a concern going into the season, but that unit rose to the occasion. Bryce Houston racked up 15 tackles as Ohio limited the Cyclones to 38 rushing yards, won the turnover battle 2-0, and possessed the ball for 11 more minutes than ISU did.
Fresno State Dominates Arizona State
Fresno State, the No. 7-ranked team in the HERO Sports G5 Top 25, proved it will be the team to beat in the Mountain West after winning against not one but two Power Five opponents this year.
Bulldogs quarterback Mikey Keene completed 32 of 49 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns to win 29-0 at Arizona State. Fresno State is now 3-0 after also beating Purdue in Week 1.
Keene connected with nine different receivers in the game, and Erik Brooks was the leader among them with 104 yards on 11 receptions. Elijah Gilliam added 69 yards on 18 rushing attempts.
Fresno State’s defense also showcased how great it can be with a shutout of a Pac-12 opponent. The Bulldogs outgained Arizona State 350-230 and forced eight turnovers, including five interceptions. Fresno State defensive back Carlton Johnson intercepted passes from all three quarterbacks who played for ASU.
South Alabama Scores Victory Over Oklahoma State
After losing to Tulane earlier in the season, South Alabama illustrated how great of a team the Jaguars still are with a 33-7 triumph at Oklahoma State.
Carter Bradley threw for 152 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions on 10-of-16 passing, and Caullin Lacy caught five of those passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, La’Damian Webb proved why he’s one of the best running backs in the Sun Belt by rushing for 151 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries.
And South Alabama’s defense thrived while limiting Oklahoma State to a single touchdown. Brock Higdon led the Jaguars with two sacks as South Alabama limited the Cowboys to just 208 yards of total offense and won the turnover margin 2-0.
Miami (Ohio) Defeats Cincinnati In Overtime
In a back-and-forth battle, Miami (Ohio) showed it can be a team to be reckoned with by pulling off a 31-24 overtime victory over Cincinnati.
RedHawks quarterback Brett Gabbert led the team with 237 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception while completing 12 of 20 passes to go with a team-high 75 rushing yards. Gage Larvadain caught just two passes but still led the RedHawks with 96 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
Defensively, Matt Salopek (18), Jacquez Warren (13), Ty Wise (10), and Brian Ugwu (10) each tallied double-digit tackles.
