A few weeks ago, the complexion of Liberty’s season drastically changed.
The Flames had won the Conference USA title and were undefeated during the regular season in 2023 before losing to Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl. Then they won their first five games of 2024 and appeared poised to be in the conversation for a College Football Playoff spot.
But then the Flames fell 27-24 against Kennesaw State, a program that was previously winless and was in its first year as an FBS team. Then the Flames lost again, 31-21 against Jacksonville State, in their following contest. And it appeared Liberty may not even make it back to the CUSA title game.
However, Liberty (8-2, 5-2 Conference USA) has gone on a three-game winning streak since then. And most recently, the Flames defeated Western Kentucky 38-21, which put them right back in contention to defend their league title.
And now they will take on Sam Houston (8-3, 5-2), which also has a shot to appear in the CUSA Championship. And with WKU hosting Jax State this week as well, plenty is on the line in this conference in the final games of the regular season.

Liberty vs. Sam Houston Prediction
I predict Liberty will win and cover the spread at -2.5. I also project the game will go Over 47.5 total points.
After the Flames lost back-to-back games against Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State, their offense has found a rhythm. They’ve scored 35 or more points in each of their last three contests, including 38 at home against Western Kentucky a week ago.
Liberty quarterback Kaidon Salter and running back Quinton Cooley are just a few of the standout players on this team. The Flames have plenty of playmakers who I expect will make things tough for Sam Houston.
The Bearkats are a great team as well, though. And their only losses against Group of Five opponents have been against WKU and Jacksonville State, two of the best squads in CUSA. And while they’ve won three of their last five games, all of those contests have either been extremely close or haven’t gone Sam Houston’s way, so I don’t know if momentum is on this team’s side.
Meanwhile, Liberty is playing at a high level in recent weeks, so I anticipate the Flames will continue to do so to close out the regular season.
