Justin Fuente’s Virginia Tech Contract: Salary, Buyout, and Bonuses

Justin Fuente signed a contract extension with Virginia Tech after winning 10 games in 2016, his first season as Hokies' head coach. He signed another extension after winning nine games in 2017. He didn't sign an extension after the 2018 season and unless the Virginia Tech administration is pleased with (as of late September) another disappointing season, he won't sign another extension after the 2019 season.

Fuente's post-2017 extension was announced in January 2018, weeks after Fuente was believed to be a potential candidate at LSU, Florida State, and elsewhere. It's a seven-year deal worth $30.5 million that runs from 2018-2024.

MORE: Who Would Hokies Hire?

Base salary (including annual retention bonuses):

2018: $4 million
2019: $4 million
2020: $4.25 million
2021: $4.25 million
2022: $4.5 million
2023: $4.5 million
2024: $5 million

Fuente is eligible for several on- and off-the-field bonuses, among them:

ACC Coach of the Year: $25,000
National Coach of the Year: $50,000
ACC Championship: $50,000
College Football Playoff appearance: $125,000
National Championship: $250,000

If Fuente is fired before his contract expires on Dec. 15, 2024, he is owed a buyout, which doesn't fall under seven figures until 2022:

After the 2018 season: $15 million
2019: $15 million
2020: $12.5 million
2021: $10 million
2022: $7.5 million
2023: $5 million
2024: $2 million
