Ryan Day is not leaving Ohio State for a head-coaching job, but he will soon be a head coach, according to FootballScoop.
Last year, Day — while wrapping up his first season as Ohio State co-offensive coordinator and quarterback coach — reportedly declined the opportunity to replace Dan Mullen at Mississippi State. This year, his stock has continued rising thanks to a dominant Buckeyes' offense and an applauded three-game run as acting head coach while Urban Meyer served a suspension.
Rumored to be a potential candidate for openings, Ryan Day is receiving a "significant raise" that comes with an "unwritten understanding" that he will become head coach when Meyer retires.
"While Urban has stated repeatedly publicly that he plans to coach next year, sources tell FootballScoop that the Ohio State head coach continues to contemplate his future on an ongoing basis, and we hear he has told Gene Smith that he doesn’t expect to continue to coach past the 2019 season," reported Jim Roussel. "One source told us we should expect Urban to address this in the days following Saturday’s Big Ten Championship."
There's been widespread speculation that Meyer, after a pathetic and disastrous handling of the Zach Smith situation and health issues, will retire after the 2018 season. Paul Finebaum said recently on The Hot Route that he's more confident than ever that Meyer will not be back at Ohio State in 2019.
