If divorce is legal in the United States of America, student-athletes' transfers should be legal, says South Carolina head coach Frank Martin.
Martin has occasionally dipped into the transfer market and seen mass exoduses during his 11 seasons as a head coach at Kansas State and South Carolina. This year, the Gamecocks have two transfers — Tre Campbell (Georgetown) and Jair Bolden (George Washington) — and lost a third — Brian Bowen (Louisville) — to ineligibility. They also lost five players to transfer, including guards David Beatty and Kory Holden, both of whom played more than 10 minutes per game last year.
The player movement is undoubtedly difficult to manage for Martin and other head coaches, but he doesn't see any reason why it should be outlawed or limited.
"Divorce is legal in this country, so why wouldn't transferring be OK?" he told ESPN's Myron Metcalf during SEC Media Days.
Martin led the Gamecocks to a 17-16 mark last year, one year after the program's first-ever Final Four appearance.
