It's been a long time since a current Group of Five program won a national championship. A real national championship. Let's-pretend-we-won-and-throw-a-parade national championships don't count. A real national championship is the AP (1936-97), BCS (1998-2014) or CFP (2014-present).
Who's the last current Group of Five program to win a national championship?
Some hints:
It hasn't happened this century.

Answer
BYU – 1984
Thirteenth-year head coach LaVell Edwards led BYU to a 13-0 mark and their first-ever national championship in 1984. The Cougars beat third-ranked Pittsburgh on the road in the opener and beat Michigan in the Holiday Bowl. It remains their only undefeated season.
