It's been a really long winter for BR-372 Rutgers-Camden. The Raptors have just two wins this season, a couple of heartbreaking one-point losses, and a whole lot of bounces that haven't gone their way.
But this week, they were one of the best teams in the country.
The Raptors thrashed Kean last weekend, and then on Monday beat previously unbeaten BR-7 Neumann, which is a Top 10 team in every ranking of D3 basketball.
It was the first win for Rutgers-Camden over a ranked team in more than a decade – the last one came in 2004 over Kean — and ended Neumann's best-ever win streak at 12 games.
Rutgers-Camden went on a 19-4 run in the second half to take the lead on Neumann, but watched the Knights come back and tie the score at 67 with a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left in the game.
But the Raptors' Marcus Taylor drove to the basket and drew a foul with 1.7 seconds on the clock, then hit one of two free throws, to give Rutgers-Camden a 68-67 win, the biggest win for the Raptors in a decade.
Unfortunately, Camden played two more games later in the week, losing to Montclair State and William Paterson to drop to 2-11 overall, and 1-8 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Neumann (14-1, 8-0 Colonial States Athletic Conference) rebounded with two more wins after the Rutgers-Camden loss, beating Immaculata and Centenary later in the week.
