Baba Black Sheep? Hardly. Baba is the Man!
Baba Waples of Penn State Berks poured in 53 points during his 44 minutes on the court on Tuesday, tying the single-game scoring record for a game in D3 this season. Alas, it wasn't enough to get the Nittany Lions a win, they fell 123-122 in overtime to College of St. Elizabeth.
It was a huge night for Waples even before he scored his 53rd point. The senior guard reached the 1,000 point mark for his career during the game, when he hit a technical foul shot early in the second half. The game stopped briefly so Waples' achievement could be recognized, and then he went back to hitting shots on his career night. He set school records for most points in a game, most field goals, and 3-pointers.
Waples was 17 of 26 from the field and 8-for-11 from beyond the arc. He also had an impressive 11-for-12 night at the free throw line for the Lions (3-9, 3-5 North Eastern Athletic Conference) and tied the season high scoring mark in D3 this year with his 53 points, matching a 53-point night put in by Ripon's Ty Sabin earlier in the season.
